Retainers
Retainers are placed after orthodontic treatment goals have been
reached and appliances are removed. Retainers are removable or fixed
appliances that are used to keep the teeth in their corrected position
while the bone and soft tissue structures remodel to adjust to the
new position of the teeth.
Instructions for retainer wear should be followed accurately! Without
retainers, teeth can move to undesired positions while the bone
and soft tissue are remodeling. In some cases, retention is a life-long
commitment. Just as we experience changes throughout our bodies
as we age, our dentition changes as well.
